Periprava is a village on the north east side of the Danube Delta, the last human settlement before the Chilia branch of the Danube reaches the Black Sea. It is one of the most isolated spots in the country, which can only be reached by boat (the last stop on the ferry route). To get here, you have to cross through a myriad of canals, all covered with water lilies.

The village consists of a few dozen squat-looking houses made of dried mud with reed roofs. The children playing in the streets are Lipovans, the blonde, blue-eyed descendants of so-called Old Believers, dissenters from the mainstream Russian Orthodox Church who fled persecution in Czarist Russia over 200 years ago.
But Periprava will forever remain in history for it was here that fifty years ago the communists agreed to create one of their main labor camps and send off their political enemies.

Today the villag   e is one great place for birdwatchers. Although the Ukranian border is right north, going east or west takes you into some really interesting swamps and canals. These places are packed with all sorts of bird species.

You will also find the Letea forest which hosts one of the most diverse universe in Europe, with wild horses, vines, 700 year old oak trees (forest protected by UNESCO) and sand dunes. Letea is the northern most subtropical forest in the world. There are over 500 different species of plants and trees that one can find in the forest, many of which are exotic. This is the only place in Europe where you can find vines (like the ones Tarzan used). Their seeds were brought here by the numerous migrating birds that come here every year.

What is more spectacular is that going just a couple hundred meters, you see a spectacular change of scenery, from subtropical forest to desert, with huge sand dunes and everything. Then, just a little farther, you run into a beautiful canal, covered with water lilies.
