Description

Custom passive solar home sits on 8.5 sloping gorgeous acres in the mountains of NW New Mexico. Million dollar views feature mountains, red rock cliffs and mesas and the Cibola National Forest. The climate is cool and crisp at 7000 foot altitude. Abundant wildlife, serene privacy, sunny days and star-filled nights along with spectacular sunrises and sunsets with big open sky offer a true New Mexican living experience.

Water Well and Water Catchment
A well with abundant fresh, mountain water makes this home very self-sufficient. A 1200 gallon tank is buried in the ground and catches rain and snow melt for watering the organic garden located nearby.

Passive Solar
A southern orientation with an abundance of large windows for full solar gain heats the house in the winter, when the sun is low. An overhang prevents the sun from entering the house during the summer when the sun is high, allowing the house to remain cool. Thus the design of the house encourages heating or cooling depending on the time of year and the angle of the sun. A small greenhouse off the kitchen adds solar gain and provides an area to grow herbs in the winter and start seeds for the garden in the summer.

Two Pacific Energy (Canadian) wood-burning stoves and two Swedish Jotul propane stoves are scattered throughout the house for additional heating on chilly nights during the winter.

No Toxins
All paints and stains and cleaning supplies used in the house are non-toxic.

Flexible Floor Plan
The house is 24 feet wide by 108 feet long, with a small greenhouse off the kitchen for a total of 2,718 square feet. The 108 foot southern exposure is filled with large windows for solar gain. All rooms have access to the outside. The interior of the house is subdivided into 3 main compartments, offering flexibility for use.

The main, open central area is 936 square feet and features an open kitchen, dining and living area with a central wood-burning stove.

The second area, which is accessed from the main room through double doors, is split in half: one area is currently used as an office and guest room (456 square feet) with its own Jotul propane stove. The other area is a master bedroom (340 square feet) with another Jotul propane stove and a separate bath (140 square feet). The bath serves the office as well, in a "Jack and Jill" configuration.

The third area is on the other side of the house, off of the main room. This space (720 squa
re feet) had its own small bathroom and closet. It is currently used as an artist's studio, but could be a family room, a media room or mother-in-law's quarters or maid's quarters. It has its own wood-burning stove and an entrance from the carport.

Special Custom Features
The 12 foot-high pitched ceilings are covered with rough cut pine. All interior doors are custom knotty pine with black iron hardware. The Thomasville kitchen cabinets are cherry and maple, stained crimson and espresso with iron knobs and pulls. all interior walls are hand-trawled for a very custom look. Baths and kitchen feature custom Italian tile and glass block. All floors are stained concrete. hand-laid pavers create a walkway around the exterior of the house and lead to a large, walled patio on the southern side, which contains a Hot Springs (Envoy model) hot tub. Hand-hewn vigas and corbels line the front portico and help to support the pitched metal roof. Custom knotty pine double front doors with a "speak easy" open to the main living area.

Energy Efficient
The LG stainless steel appliances in the chef's kitchen and LG front loading washer and dry offer efficiency. Two on-demand hot water heaters (one propane, one electric) offer hot water without wasting it. Hunter Douglas duet cellular shades on the entire south side of the house offer beauty, soft lighting and insulation in the winter. Hunter Douglas wood blinds on the north side of the house enhance the view of the northern cliffs.

Carport
At 744 square feet, this carport can easily cover 3 cars. It shares the roof of the house, is supported by corbels and vigas, and is plumbed and has electricity. The ceiling is knotty pine, matching the interior of the house. These features would allow for easy conversion into another room if desired.

Storage Shed
A custom-built storage shed (240 square feet) that matches the house, sits on the property, offering storage for garden tools, etc.

Timberlake Ranch
The house sits within a 7,000 acre ranch with lots no smaller than 5 acres. There is an active land-owners' community that offers social events and a library at the original ranch house. A spectacular lake sits in the center of the ranch and is stocked with fish and is available for kayaking or non-motor boating. Hunting is allowed in designated areas outside of the ranch. Grocery shopping and hospitals are located in Grants or Gallup, NM.
